Ireland’s bilateral and multilateral political relations with Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada; political aspects of the bilateral relationship with the United States of America and the transatlantic relationsip between the EU and the US

Ireland’s bilateral relationships with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are co-ordinated within the Department’s Political Division. The Division is also responsible for the broad foreign policy aspects of Ireland’s relations with the US and Canada.

The Division works closely with other relevant Divisions, and with the Embassies in Washington D.C., Ottawa, Mexico City, Brasilia and Buenos Aires.

Political Division monitors political developments in the LAC region and in its regional organisations, and formulates Ireland’s approach to such developments, including their human rights dimensions.

At EU level, the Division, working with the Permanent Representation, Brussels, is responsible for the Irish input into the development of the Union’s relationships with the US, Canada and the LAC countries, in particular through the Common Foreign and Security Policy.
