EU in the World
EU External Relations cover the whole of the Union's external action – both Community policies that are implemented by the Commission, such as enlargement, development cooperation, humanitarian aid and trade, and the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), which is intergovernmental in character.
Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, is the EU’s foreign policy chief. She draws on her role as Vice-President of the European Commission to ensure the consistency and coordination of the European Union's external action. She is assisted in her duties by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s diplomatic service.
