Summary
The Department of Foreign Affairs strongly recommends that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation, before travelling to country. You should check any exclusions and that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.
Please be advised that the Irish Government assumes no responsibility whatsoever for any expenses incurred by Irish citizens as a result of a personal emergency whilst travelling.
There has been political unrest in Madagascar since January 2009, and the situation remains unpredictable. Although foreigners have not been targeted in past demonstrations, we are advising any Irish citizens to avoid the centre of Antananarivo, to exercise caution, and to keep an eye on news reports, as well as any information that may be posted on this website. Irish citizens should also avoid any large gatherings or demonstrations.
